Gin Rummy is a very interesting game that allows players to adapt the rules a little, especially when talking about scoring. This is why it is highly important that you look at the gin rummy rules that are associated with the game location where you are playing. Although there might be differences, most rules are the same as there is not much variation linked with the game of gin rummy.
Most gin rummy games will see 2 players although you can also play with a maximum of four. You will always use a regular deck of cards and no jokers. Ace is the lowest card in the deck. All face cards
are worth 10 points, the ace is worth 1 point and the rest of the cards are worth their numeric values. When two players are playing the start of the game will see each player receiving 10 cards as a starting hand.
The purpose of the game is to score as many points as possible by forming different melds. We have 2 types of melds: runs or sets. A set is made out of 3 or 4 cards that have the same numeric value while runs are similar to straight flushes in poker.
Original Gin rummy rules state that the person that is not dealing will start the game, which is made out of turns. A turn starts by picking up a card from the stock or from the discard pile and will end with you discarding a card. A hand in a game will usually end with one person knocking. You can expose your cards and knock when your deadwood (cards that are not matched in melds) have a point value that is less than 10 points. If this happens you will gain a good bonus of 25 points. There is also the possibility of not knocking and you can wait till you have all the cards arranged in melds with one card to discard. In this case you say GIN and you gain a bonus of 25 points. A game will consist of as many hands as necessary for one player to reach 100 points. Alternatively players can also play till a different score is achieved.
There are different gin rummy rules variations that can appear but the ones that are mentioned above are the most common ones and you will usually see them in most games that you are to play.
